Various - Genesis: The Beginnings Of Rock Vol. 3 - Sweet Home Chicago

"Genesis" was a legendary series of albums compiled by British Blues experts Mike Leadbitter and Mike Rowe between 1972 and 1975. They were a lengthy celebration of the Chess catalog -- each volume was a box set that held four different LPs, complete with lavish illustrations and extensive notes about the music and the performers.
Over the last 40 years, the Chess catalog has been extensively reissued, but some of the cuts off of "Genesis" remain rare and hard to find even today. Although "Genesis" volume one stuck largely to material that had previously been issued on 78, volumes two and three opened up the gates with rare unissued cuts and alternate takes that had not seen the light of day since they were first recorded.
Although 12 volumes were originally slated for the "Genesis" anthology, it was sadly not to be. Critically acclaimed at the time they came out, it was either due to lack of sales, or perhaps due to co-compiler Mike Leadbitter’s untimely death in 1974 that saw the series grind to a halt after just three installments. The third and final volume, compiled by Mike Rowe, was dedicated to Mike Leadbitter when it came out in 1975. Today, they’re prized collectors items, holding a special place of honor among those who are lucky enough to have them in their collection.

Thanks again Xyros esp. for the link to the Blues Unlimited Podcast. It's good to see that BU is not completely forgotten.

The late Mike L was mortified to discover that record one, side one had Muddy's 1964 version of I Feel Like Going Home rather the the intended 1948 version. He spent most of that day phoning around telling reviewers of the mess up.

He begged and pleaded for it to be repressed with the correct version but it never happened.

Can you give your copy a spin to see what Going Home plays.

Oops typo can you amend 1964 to

1963 (LP 1483)

Thanks

Xyros said...

@ Alan Balfour, which LP has the typo as I can't find it.?

Xyros said...

@ Alan Balfour, worked out the typo after listening to Going Home on the lp, and the Aristrocat and the version on Folk Singer LP on Youtube. It is the Folk Singer version on the LP. Do you think I can get my money back?

Hugely grateful - but struggling to match the tracks with the discography. Is disc 1, track 1 really Johnson Machine Gun, as indicated in the track list at Discogs?

Many thanks

Chris

Xyros said...

That's what the accompanying book also gives as the title.

Sorry to be a pain. I'm puzzled because the lyrics of the first track don't seem like Johnson Machine Gun, and because disc 1, side 1 has 8 tracks instead of 7, as listed.
Truly wonderful music and much appreciated.

Chris

@ Chris, with the help of Shazam I finally worked out your problem. You're tagging from Discogs but using the tags that belong to " The Beginnings of Rock: Genesis vol. 1 " it should be The Beginnings of rock: Sweet Home Chicago vol. 3"

That is such a great help - many thanks.

@Xyros, a very nice compilation is this, i got all tracks on several compilations (cd-reissues), but i was very curious about the sound; disc 4 contains 7 + 7 tracks, but wirz lists 16 tracks ?
( and the sound is great!)

disc 4 is 14 tracks Jimmy Rogers, but track list on wirz says 9 tracks Rogers & 7 tracks John Brim ?

Xyros said...

Thank you kempen for spotting the error I made years ago. Disc 4 that you downloaded came from Genesis; The Beginnings Of Rock.
I"ll rip the correct disc 4 this weekend for you and the thousand other downloaders.

I have tried to request a re-up through my gmail account but I seem to have an issue
Volume 3 links "has expired and does not exist anymore on this server"
I would be most grateful for a re-up
Volumes 1 & 2 are great!

Many thanks for the re-ups - I thought that you were chilling out but you're obviously on the ball!

@ Anonymous, more or less settled into our temp. housing but still have to box all our stuff. In between the acts I get to play around with my computer.
