Can't remember if the files where tagged and judging by the file sizes bitrates might vary.

One of the greatest overview of 20's-30's piano blues. Supervised by the late great Francis Wilford Smith for Magpie. Amazing.

Johnny Kinkdom sez "Thank You, Thank You, Thank You". There are not words to express my appreciation of these amazing recordings and the overall excellent quality of your site. And, I'm only on Vol. 2!

Thanks

@JCO, I've downloaded and checked vol. 21 and had no problems. Try downloading a 2nd time.

Thanks, Xyros . . . this is a real service. I had some of these once upon a time, the Paramounts and Walter Roland, but just couldn't afford to take them all in. Nice to have them all in one place, even if some of the volumes have been superceded by Yazoo's CD issues. . . .

I know what you man Frank, I packed it in at volume 13due to lack of funds, glad Sylvain shared the complete set.

For volume 21, I had to download the latest version of Stuffit Expander (for free). I had version 10, but version 15 (for Mac) did the trick. Hope that helps.

Getting an empty folder for 21....

Vol. 21 seems to be causing a problem sometimes. Downloaded it again but it unpacked as an empty folder. Unpacked a 2nd time and it was alright,
Try 7zip to unpack, I use it if nothing else works.

Thanks also for many other posts and, by the (half-free) way for this piano collection --- That will make 14 comments: 13 is a number to avoid!

Fantastic post. Thank you very much. Is there any source for the liner notes of volume 5? All the other volumes contain scans of the back cover. Thanks.

A warning to everyone using the tracklists from Stefan Wirz's site to retag these files. The tracklists on Stefan Wirz's site do not always correspond with the tracklists on the actual albums. So if you use Stefan Wirz's tracklists you'll end up with a jumble of incorrectly tagged files. You can only work from the tracklists given on the back cover of each album - which is a massive job. I've spent over 3 hours this morning retagging and now I'm aware they are incorrect I'll have to delete the lot and start from scratch.

Xyros said...

@Bob Mac, I'm sorry about allthe extra work due to incorrect tracklists. My fault as I have an almost blind trust in Stefan's site and work which are usually good.

Bob Mac said...

Xyros, I've come across this quite a few times with Stefan's site. In this current case with the 21 Vols of Piano Blues, a few of the tracklists from Stefan's site are the same as the tracklists on the rear covers; but most have a completely different track order. I have no idea why this is. Perhaps there are different editions of the albums with different track order. Perhaps Stefan is careless when compiling these lists. Perhaps Stefan acquires these track lists from collectors around the world, and these collectors are careless. Who knows?

Anyway, I'm sitting here in Thailand listening to the Aussie footy matches on the TV and correcting the track lists for all 21 vols. I should be finished in a couple hours and will upload the lists and post a zippy link here so all the others won't have to repeat the nightmare I've had today...LOL

Marcfr said...

@ Bob Mac , you can also find all this albums on discogs :
https://www.discogs.com/fr/label/86120-Magpie-Records-2
Better check first but i believe they are correct , i often use discogs and just copy and paste (It's fast & easy) .

Bob Mac said...

OK here it is. A text file with the correct track listings for all 21 vols. These are in the same order as the tracks listed on the rear cover. So everyone can go ahead and use these lists in whatever tag software they use (I use TagScanner)

I haven't listened to all 21 LPs but have tested several tracks and the tags are now correct. PHEW! Now it's time for an icy cold beer.

Left almost speechless with this piano set, a simple thanks seems but small recompense Xyros, but thanks nontheless.

Xyros said...

Thank you Bob Mac and Marcfr for the links to the track listing.
Bob Mac, at least it gave you something to do while watching the footy and that you actually earned that ice cold beer at the end. I was, as a child, a South Melbourne Swans fan and it was heartbreaking to learn thru internet that they had become the Sydney Swans. Saw Bobby Skilton many times and also the great Ron Barrassi who played for Melbourne. Different game back then when I compare it to modern day footy.

Thanks, this is great! Does anyone know if liner notes were ever written for Vol. 3?

Thank you, Xyros, BobMac, and MarcFr - this is a staggering, deep overview, and a treat to the ears!

Thank you for your generosity in sharing it with us, and in your work at getting it out here. Cheers!

Thanks for this wonderful series!

one of the wonderful things (there are more!)about this site is that every now and again I see a posting and think.... Hey! I have these, but it must be 2, 5, 10 years since I listened to any of them.
And, like right now started to listen to the set.
Great, why did I leave them languishing on my hard drive for so long? and why should I not leave them on eternal repeat? The answer of course is simple: Blind Willie Johnson.
Thanks for the reminder.

Thank you again.

Glad you all like this posting that was languishing amongst the older postings. There are still a lot of good Lp's on the older pages worth searching for and if the links are dead just ask for a re-posting.

GREAT posts! Thanks a lot. Although first lover of Hillbilly Bop, my tastes go towards Piano Blues too!
