She blew me and the rest of the audience away with her playing but especially when she did a couple of numbers with drum and fife. If you listen to drum and fife closely and get pulled in it's mesmerizing. David Evans was then alone fighting for it, recording those musicians, rehearsing them, buying them guitar strings... He launched the Memphis University's High Water records because he was almost the only one in the USA to have faith on those artists and in their music. He gave me tapes he made by R.L. and Jessie Mae and others while I was visiting Memphis and the Delta for to see if it was possible for me to find a label interested in those artists. This is how the French Vogue label first of all issued the first entire LP's by R.L. Burnside and Jessie Mae Hemphill. The critics were then far from enthusiastic and the sales were poor but anyway it gave the opportunity to those blues artists to come in Europe and play in festivals and such. And record again and finally be a little bit recognized in their own country.
