Screamin' Jay Hawkins - Screamin' The Blues

This is a great collection of Screamin' Jay Hawkins blues renditions. Though "I Put A Spell On You" is absent from the track list, this compact disc has a variety of Hawkins blues essentials. One of the best songs on the album is a rare Paul McCartney cover - "Monkberry Moon Delight" - which was featured on McCartney's second solo album "Ram". It's a rousing and supremely entertaining rendition. I strongly recommend this album to blues fans all over, as Screamin' Jay Hawkins pours out his heart and soul into his over-the-top vocals. Tracks recorded between 1953-1970.

Track 3 of side 1 is 192kbps (replacement track) due to misuse of the record player many years ago. The rest of the LP is 320kbps.

Writer Cliff White, noted Screamin' Jay aficionado of the time, got Pete Shertser (Red Lightnin') to issue this material in the UK (1979). It was marketed as "blues" and reviewers seemed to be of the opinion that it was anything b-u-t blues, and hence spurned. Some critics took great pleasure in lampooning the inclusion of the McCartney song. How times have changed.
