Blues Boy Rawlins - A-K-A "Sweet Lovin' Daddy" (re-post)
A1I Got A Woman Shining My Shoe
A2Susie
A3Wake Up In The Morning
B1Baby, She Loves Me
B2I'm Leaving You Baby
B3Going Back To Alabama
B4Just Playing The Blues
A great unknown. This record was not even reviewed in the main blues magazines of the time. Apparently, this man called "Bobby" played in the streets in the LA area and for a long period. This might be his sole recording. There is a contemporary singer and harp player L. Kensey (http://www.myspace.com/harpjam)who have learned his blues from him, played in the sreets with our man. Kinsey leads a blues band called HarpJam that seems to be quite active in California.
I used to know Lovin' Daddy, as he preferred to be called, met him when I was working with Shakey Jake. Daddy would perform at Jake's Club Safara on the occasion, usually just showing up when he felt like it. Quite a character. He was a transient at the time. I doubt he ever recorded before or since this album
Thank you Seven Echo for sharing your memories of Blues Boy. You're a lucky person to have worked with Shakey Jake and to see Blues Boy live. IMO the blues world missed out not hearing Blues Boy enough.
The photo on the album cover was taken in the entry way to Jake's Club Safara at 54th & Vermont in S. Central Los Angeles, the door was to the left. I remember Jake saying that Lovin' Daddy picked what he wanted in the picture including all those people and the wine bottles. Playing guitar for Shakey Jake was a lot of fun, I'm glad I had the opportunity to meet him and become his friend.
A correction on the info about the album. Shakey Jake Harris put the record out on his label, but he does NOT play harmonica on this record. Blues Boy Rawlins is playing the harmonica, which he played in rack around his neck like Blind Joe Hill & Jimmy Reed did.
