T-Bone Singleton - Living With The Blues (re-post)

Guitarist, singer and songwriter T-Bone Singleton was born in New Orleans and grew up in Baton Rouge, where he still lives. JSP Records of London recently released his debut recording, Walkin' the Floor, which represents some of his best songs over a ten-year period.
As a youth, T-Bone recalls seeing and hearing the old-style Southern swamp bluesmen like Silas Hogan and Guitar Kelly playing in local cafes, and musicians like Slim Harpo and Lightnin' Slim were also frequent performers in Baton Rouge juke joints. Singleton was raised on gospel and soul music and became interested in guitar after hearing his neighbor play, and he began playing a nylon-stringed acoustic guitar at 14. In high school, he worked nights with his father building cabinets, and it was on a job with his father that he got his first electric guitar and amplifier. Within months, he was playing guitar and bass in a gospel group and playing soul music with high school friends. Later, he began playing in clubs in north Baton Rouge until he was approached in the mid-1970s by Buddy Powell, who asked him to become the guitarist for his band, the Condors. The regional band toured the Gulf Coast for several years, playing blues, soul and Top 20 hits until Powell quit to become musical director at Gloryland Baptist Church.
Singleton went on to become an ordained minister and has delivered numerous sermons since then, but he still has no full-time position as a pastor. Like many other bluesmen from the South, Singleton's style of blues guitar playing and singing is heavily gospel-oriented, and these days, he still plays local clubs in and around Baton Rouge and has made several appearances at the annual River City Blues Festival.
His 1996 JSP Records release, Walkin' the Floor, is a small fraction of his output from the last ten years, and the ever-inventive songwriter and guitarist probably has another three albums worth of material ready to be recorded. Well-respected in Baton Rouge, Singleton's debut album was produced by blues guitarist and singer Larry Garner. ( Richard Skelley - Allmusic)
T-Bone Singleton died 9th of August 2005.

Sonny Rodgers - Last Jam (re-post)

Bluesman Oliver Lee 'Sonny' Rodgers died May 7, 1990 of congestive heart failure in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where he had lived since the early 1970's.
Born December 4, 1939 near Hughes, Arkansas, Sonny was 'discovered' by Alan Lomax in the early 1960's during Lomax's Library of Congress recording project. Rodgers was playing with Forrest City Joe and Willie Cobbs at the time.
He also performed with Joe Hill Louis, Joe Willie Wilkins, Eddie Boyd, and countless other Delta area bluesmen. Railroad jobs took Sonny up to Illinois, and later to Minneapolis, where he teamed up with Sammy Lawhorn & Mojo Buford, serving as a sideman on Muddy Waters' tours.
In 1976, Sonny went into the studio with Buford, contributing to the anthology LP 'Mojo Buford's Chicago Blues Summit' (Rooster Records #R-7603).
He formed his own band, the Cat Scratchers, in 1984. They recorded several cassette-only albums before releasing their first single, 'Cadillac Baby' / 'Big Leg Woman' (Blue Moon #BMR-001). The single was a hit with the critics, winning the single-of-the-year award at the 1990 W.C. Handy Awards in Memphis.
These songs were packaged together with others recorded at the now world famous New Moon Studio in Minneapolis, and were released on CD later that year on a British label ('They Call Me The Cat Daddy' - Fattening Frogs #J-2).
Sadly, Sonny had passed away at age 50, a time which should have been the prime of his career as a bluesman. 'He was one singing dude', wrote harmonica ace William Clarke in his note of condolence to Sonny's widow, Clara.
He touched a number of lives in his short time on this planet, including that of Blue Moon Records founder Pat Dawson, who recently declared in an interview with a magazine writer, 'the label owes it's existence to Sonny Rodgers. He got a lot of us started on the paths that our lives have taken.'
His W.C. Handy trophy was on public display for a number of years at St Paul's Blues Saloon. It now graces the wall of the control room at New Moon, where they continue to pump out great blues recordings.

I'm sorry to say that I have no more info on these last recordings of Sonny Rodgers and couldn't find anything om the internet about them. Any info would be welcome.
Please read the comments for a track listing from Gerard and Bob Mac.

Tomcat Courtney - The News (re-post)

Blues guitarist/singer Tomcat Courtney was born in Marlin, TX, on January 22, 1929, and raised in Downsville, TX, where his father, a ragtime piano player, had a juke joint. He became a dancer and joined a circus show as a teenager, beginning to sing in the show. He moved to Lubbock, TX, after World War II and became a cook, meanwhile learning to play guitar. He played roadhouses throughout the Southwest and settled in San Diego, CA, in 1971, where he began playing clubs several nights a week, also appearing regularly in Phoenix, AZ. His first recording came on the album San Diego Blues Jam released by Advent Records in 1974, and over the years he pressed up his own CDs to sell at his gigs. In 2000, his song "Shake It Up Baby" appeared on the album I Better Move On... by Len Rainey & the Midnight Players. Signed to Blue Witch Records, he made his national recording debut with Downsville Blues, released on May 20, 2008, when he was 79 years old.

Live tape that was released in 1992 made available by Frits.

Neal Pattman - Lightnin' Twist (re-post)

One of Neal Pattman's tricks on harmonica was to break up his playing with wild whoops and cries, in the style of his famous predecessor Sonny Terry. Pattman, who has died aged 79, did in fact come from Terry's old neighbourhood of Washington County, Georgia.
He grew up on a farm, one of 14 children; he lost his right arm in an accident with a wagon wheel at the age of seven. As a teenager, he played music for cash on the streets of Athens, Georgia. As he told the English journalist and photographer Val Wilmer in 1978: "I couldn't get jobs like other people, but I started playing the harp and got to making lots of money with it. "
By the time he was in his 20s, he was married with a family. So he took a job in the kitchens on the campus of the University of Georgia in Athens. But he did not stop playing music. "It really helped me out earning my living," said Pattman of these years. "Any time I felt like going, I can make a hundred and some dollars a week blowin' my harp."
In 1989, he was invited to New York City to play at the Lincoln Center for the perfoming arts and, as a result of that engagement, began to be booked at festivals.
A couple of years later, he met Timothy Duffy, who was the moving spirit behind the Music Maker Relief Foundation. This is a North Carolina-based organisation that supports folk musicians, and Pattman then begin to play with other artists associated with the Foundation, such as the singer-guitarists Guitar Gabriel and Cootie Stark.
Pattman and Stark became a team and went on a 48-city Blues Revival tour with Taj Mahal. For Duffy, Pattman was a man who understood what the Foundation was about, and he was "a joy to be around", whether they were spending an afternoon with Lou Reed, jamming with Lee Konitz or meeting fans.
Pattman visited Britain in 1995, and his engagement at London's 100 Club, accompanied by his friend Gary Erwin on piano and the English guitarist Dave Peabody, was preserved on the CD Live In London. Peabody also played with Pattman on the older musician's home ground, even doing the rounds of small black clubs in Georgia and South Carolina.
Pattman's only other album, Prison Blues, made in 1998 for Duffy's Music Maker label, is a fascinating set of harmonica tunes, old-school blues and even a disco twist. In 2004 Pattman and Stark (who died this April), made their last trip together to the Music Maker Relief Foundation, now based in Hillsborough, North Carolina, to play with Kenny Wayne Shepherd, a singer and guitarist two generations their junior. Their work can be heard on Shepherd's forthcoming album 10 Days Out: Blues From The Backroads, and they appear in the accompanying DVD.
Neal Pattman, blues musician, born January 10 1926; died May 4 2005. (The Guardian)
Original cassette rip that was later re-released as a CD on High John.
